How do I know if I might have a sleep disorder? |
|
|
If you're not sure you have a sleep disorder, you may want to ask
the opinion of your bed partner or other family members. Frequently
they are more aware of a problem than the patient. There are many
clues that may indicate a sleep disorder: Sleepiness in the daytime
or frequent awakenings from sleep are two important clues that should
not be ignored. How well do you
sleep? |
 |
|
 |
Does boredom cause sleepiness? |
| |
NO. Boredom simply allows sleep deprivation to show up. |
 |
|
 |
Do all patients with sleep problems need to be tested? |
| |
NO. Some sleep problems, such as Restless Leg Syndrome and some
forms of insomnia can be diagnosed and addressed through consultation
with one of our physicians. |
 |
|
 |
Do I need to be referred by another doctor to
see one of the sleep doctors? |
| |
Good question. Although we prefer that patients have a referral,
we do not require referrals for sleep consultation. However, some
insurance plans require a Primary Care Physician's referral for consultation
before they will cover the cost of service. Sleep testing (if necessary)
does require a referral. Our physicians can refer you for testing
if it is determined as necessary. |

 |
If I think I have a sleep problem, what is the
next step? |
| |
If you (or someone who knows you) thinks you have a sleep disorder,
you probably do have a sleep disorder. Consult your Primary Care Physician
or contact us.
Much of your evaluation can be done by completing online
forms. Call our office (614) 433-2000 to set up access to our forms.

How are sleep disorders treated? |
| |
Depending on the disorder, various treatments could be appropriate:
medications, surgery, behavioral treatments and mechanical devices
are all possible treatments. |
 |
|
 |
Does the treatment of insomnia always require medication? |
| |
No. Insomnia is best treated with behavioral changes. Sometimes simple changes as described in "Tips for a Good Night's Sleep" will suffice. But, the most effective treatment for insomnia is called cognitive behavioral therapy. For more information, click here to http://www.nbsempowers.com. cure me? |
| |
Not necessarily. It is important to realize that sleep apnea causes
weight gain. Also, treating sleep apnea can assist in weight loss.
Our sleep specialist can give you specific advice in this regard. |
